The Harpenden Skinfold Caliper accurately measures body fat and is the most prestigious skinfold caliper available.
Harpenden Skinfold Calipers have set the industry standard for over 40 years which is why they are the leading skinfold caliper for skinfold measurements and calculating body fat.
Harpenden skinfold calipers are recognised as the most prestigious body fat caliper due to being the only skinfold caliper that’s CE compliant and also calibrated using masters traceable to national standards.
Our Harpenden Calipers are also presented in a wooden box for safe transport and protection.
Skinfold Calipers pinch the fat directly under the skin away from the muscle with the caliper tips to measure body fat which is painless in contrast to other invasive techniques. The devices gauge then records the thickness of the ‘pinch’.
In 1958, the Harpenden Skinfold Caliper was designed in collaboration with D. J. M. Tanner; a prominent force in the use of skinfold measurements for body fat measurement. The Harpenden Body Fat Caliper has set the industry standard for over 40-years since. It has a 99% accuracy level, as a result, you can always trust the reading provided.
All over the world, Harpenden Calipers are used for diagnostics and research, in fields such as sports performance, nutrition/malnutrition, obesity, eating disorder assessment and juvenile growth disorders.
Durnin and Womersley Conversion Booklet
Harpenden Skinfold Calipers from HaB also include a book that contains conversion tables allowing easy body fat calculation. This conversion is based on the Durnin and Womersley system; a four-measurement-site formula that takes skinfold measurements from the Biceps, Triceps, Subscapula and Iliac Crest.
The book also provides information on:
- The evaluation and meaning of body composition
- How to set-up and use the Harpenden Skinfold Caliper
- How to take body fat readings
- Maximum preferred/desired fat levels
- Conversion tables for body fat % vs skinfold thickness in people of all ages
- Body density equations
Material & Cleaning
The Harpenden Skinfold Caliper is made from high-quality stainless steel, rubber, plastic and glass.
1. Keep the Calipers clean using a lint free cloth and ensure that they are stored in dry conditions to prevent corrosion.
2. Do not use any spirit based cleaner on the Caliper as it may cause damage to the plastic materials.
0mm to 80mm
10gms/mm2 (constant over range)
The Harpenden Skinfold Caliper Model: HSB-BI is CE marked in compliance with the Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC for a Class 1 Device with measuring function and calibrated using masters traceable to national standards.
Using the calibration block
The calibration block provided with the Harpenden ‘Caliper with Tape and Block‘ option is not used to calibrate the Caliper, rather it is used to test the calibration.
Because skinfold calipers use metal springs, over time the calibration accuracy can change. The calibration block allows you to check the accuracy.
To do this, measure the thickness of the 10mm calibration block using the Caliper. If the reading is out by more than 1mm, your Skinfold Caliper will need recalibrating.
We do not provide servicing and calibration for the Harpenden Skinfold Calipers, we leave that to the people best qualified – the manufacturers.
That way you know you are getting a fully certified calibration for your skinfold calipers.
