Description
What is a peak flow meter?
It is a device that will measure how well you are able to expel air. The Mini-Wright Peak Flow Meter is able to measure PEF (peak expiratory flow) between 60-880 Litres/minute. It is useful for daily checking of your peak flow rate which is beneficial in keeping your asthma in check, along with your asthma action plan.
How to use a peak flow meter
The Mini-Wright Peak Flow Meter is portable and easy to use.
- Simply find a comfortable seated or standing position while holding your peak flow meter.
- Ensure you reset your meter by moving the ‘pointer’ back to the first line on the scale. In the case of the Mini-Wright Peak Flow Meter, this is 60 L/min.
- The peak flow meter should be held in a horizontal position, but make sure your fingers do not obstruct the scale.
- Take a very deep breath in and then bring the device up to your mouth, placing your lips tightly around the mouthpiece.
- Breathe out as much as you can, as quickly as you can, as forcefully as you can.
- After breathing out, keep a record of your reading on the scale.
- Perform this 3 times (from point 4 to point 6 above).
- When you have all 3 results, record the highest of the 3 scores in your Peak Flow Diary as your peak flow measurement.
What does a peak flow meter measure?
A peak flow meter measures how quickly you can breathe out. It does this by utilising a scale for your peak expiratory flow. The Mini-Wright Peak Flow Meter displays the scale in L/Min. This is the amount of litres of air you are able to breathe out per minute. Regular readings of your peak flow score provides insight as to whether your airways are narrowing or not. Narrowing of the airways can be a sign that you have asthma.
What should a peak flow meter reading be?
A peak flow meter reading score will depend on gender, age and height. A healthcare professional will be able to provide this information for you. But this ‘general’ score will be used as a comparison to your score to help with a diagnosis of asthma. Furthermore, if your current score is markedly different to your best score, then this might be a sign that your asthma is poorly managed.
