The POWERbreathe KH2 is an electronic inspiratory-muscle training device with software, intended for use by healthcare professionals for inspiratory muscle training, testing and analysis.
The POWERbreathe KH2 includes MIP and PIF test functions to collect patient data for baseline and outcome measures, while its unique ‘Auto Optimising’ RMT/IMT technology adapts the training resistance to the user’s personal inspiratory muscle capabilities.

The POWERbreathe KH2 with Breathe-Link Medic Live Feedback Software applies the tried and trusted principles of resistance (weight) training to the inspiratory muscles and can be thought of as ‘dumbbells for the diaphragm’. When the inspiratory muscles are overloaded regularly for a period of a few weeks, they adapt, becoming stronger and more resistant to fatigue. Activating stronger inspiratory muscles requires less effort during a given task, hence dyspnoea is reduced.
Dyspnoea, or breathlessness, is the main debilitating symptom of cardiorespiratory disease but it is also a common symptom in other conditions and in all cases, it has a profoundly impairing influence upon the quality of life and independence.
Strengthening the inspiratory muscles has a universally beneficial effect upon dyspnoea and dyspnoea can be improved by specific strength training of the inspiratory muscles.
KH2 Training Resistance
The POWERbreathe KH2 uses an electronically controlled, rapid-response valve to create a resistance to inhalation.
Training against this resistance causes the inspiratory muscles to adapt, becoming stronger and more resistant to fatigue. This leads to reduced breathlessness and improved exercise tolerance and quality of life.
As the patient breathes through the POWERbreathe KH2 you will notice that they gradually have to work harder to breathe in. This is the effect of resistance training acting on the inspiratory muscles (primarily the diaphragm and intercostal muscles). When breathing out, there is no resistance and the patient should breathe out normally, allowing the chest and breathing muscles to relax, naturally pushing the air from their lungs.
The POWERbreathe KH2 training resistance is specifically designed to match the dynamic changes in breathing muscle strength throughout the breath and can automatically adapt to increases in inspiratory muscle strength at the beginning of each training session.
How are results displayed?
Results are displayed on screen following a training or assessment session, or can be viewed in real-time using the Breathe-Link Medic PC software supplied. Parameters displayed include Maximal Inspiratory Pressure (cmH2O, highest 1 second average), Peak Inspiratory Flow (L/s), Training load (cmH2O), Average Power (Watts), Average inhaled volume (L) and Energy (Joules).
Training load is gradually introduced over the first five breaths of a training session. The first two breaths are unloaded. During these breaths, inhaled volume and flow are measured and used to set an appropriate training load.
Loading is then gradually introduced during breaths three and four until full loading is achieved for breath five and onwards.
The POWERbreathe KH2 training regime of 30 breaths, twice a day typically takes only a few minutes a day and, used properly, patients should start to observe the benefits within just a few weeks.

MIP Test, S-Index

- Washable Valve: The KH-Series valve head can be removed for cleaning using POWERbreathe Cleansing Tablets. Alternatively, it is recommended that each patient has use of their own valve head.

Advanced Personalised Variable Load Training
The patented POWERbreathe KH-Series has an electronically controlled resistance valve, that provides variable pressure threshold resistance, optimised to match the strength profile of the inspiratory muscles for maximum training effectiveness.
The POWERbreathe KH-Series Auto-optimising Inspiratory Muscle Training system automatically adapts to the patients personal training requirements.
Manual Training Intensity
This training intensity adjustment option allows resistance to be manually set from 5 to 200cm H2O to suit the patient’s personal training requirements.
The KH-Series training guidance system provides breathing pacing guidance, displays the number of breaths remaining in a training session and informs you when the session is complete.
Allows up to 150 breaths training stimulus to the respiratory/inspiratory muscles.
MIP Test with Breathe-Link Medic Software
Maximum Inspiratory Pressure (MIP) test. A test that measures the strength of the muscles used in breathing.
Real-time / Live feedback provides healthcare professionals with a detailed analysis of each breath to help respiratory and pulmonary rehabilitation assessment.
Predicted Normal Value Band. Highest One Second Average is your MIP score for the current breath.
S-Index / PIF Test Live Session
Strength index is a measure of the patient’s inspiratory muscle strength, based on the relationship between pressure and flow. PIF (Flow) is a measure of the maximum rate at which the patient can inhale air into their lungs.
This measurement is based upon the maximum measured flow rate during the test breath, which gives an indication of the speed at which the patient’s inspiratory muscles contract.
MIP Test Results with Breathe-Link Medic Software

Multi-Level Analytic Review System to Monitor patient progress and help assess Respiratory Muscle Conditions. Session by Session graphical view of historical tests performed with the KH2 unit.
Includes: QC MIP and average pressure for the session. To ensure accurate and repeatable MIP results, the POWERbreathe KH2 Breathe-Link Medic software has introduced the QC MIP mechanism: The maximum value of 3 manoeuvres that vary by less then 20% is recorded.
Results Level 2
Breath-by-breath detail of test performed is recorded allowing healthcare professionals the ability to identify trends and improvements.
Includes: MIP result for each breath and average pressure for each breath.
Results Level 3
Individual breaths in a session can be assessed.
